For those who build power outside the system. This award recognizes grassroots activists and community organizers who mobilize people directly — rallying, canvassing, coordinating, and strategizing to shift culture and change lives from the ground up.
Bry’an E. Azuekwu is a Baltimore community strategist and advocate committed to equity, healing, and neighborhood transformation. He serves as Community Leadership Project Performance Manager at Park Heights Renaissance and Director of Constituent Services & Community Engagement for Maryland Delegate Malcolm P. Ruff. Bry’an partners across government, nonprofits, and faith communities to expand access to resources, arts and culture, public health, and youth opportunities. A champion for recovery and men’s wellness, he mobilizes residents to co-create safer, thriving blocks and sustainable civic power in West Baltimore.
WHAT COMMUNITY HAD TO SAY:
"When we talk about transformative community work in Baltimore, the name Bry’an E. Azuekwu rises to the surface. Bry’an has become a trusted keeper of the Park Heights community, blending grassroots passion, policy insight, and hands-on service into a model of leadership that uplifts people and places simultaneously. As President of the Pimlico Terrace Neighborhood Association (PTNA), Bry’an has carried the daily work of community on his back — from organizing food distributions and back-to-school drives, to showing up in moments of crisis with comfort, resources, and solutions.
His impact is not only in events, but in the trust he’s built by being consistently present, even when there were no cameras, no headlines, and no applause. He has served as the neighbor who listens, the advocate who responds, and the leader who insists that Park Heights is not defined by its challenges but by its resilience. As a member of the Pimlico Community Advisory Board’s Executive Committee, Bry’an has been at the table for transformational work around the future of Pimlico Race Course and neighborhood redevelopment. His voice has helped ensure that community input is not only heard, but acted upon in decisions that will affect generations to come.
He models what it means to be both a bridge-builder and a protector of community interest, navigating partnerships with elected officials, nonprofits, and grassroots leaders. Beyond titles, Bry’an has been a quiet force — mentoring young people, supporting families in grief through his work as a mortician apprentice, and investing in the leadership of others.
Whether through mobilizing hundreds of residents for neighborhood beautification, coordinating legislative advocacy alongside Delegate Malcolm Ruff, or simply being the one to give someone a ride to a critical appointment, Bry’an embodies the essence of showing up. His leadership is rooted not in ego, but in care. Not in recognition, but in responsibility. He is a change maker who moves both policies and people, a people’s advocate who grounds justice in lived reality, and a community keeper who reminds us that presence is the greatest power.
Bry’an’s work is proof that transformation doesn’t come from one role or one position — it comes from a lifetime of weaving together advocacy, service, and love for the people. He is both a product of his community and a relentless builder of its future. For these reasons and more, I proudly submit Bry’an E. Azuekwu for recognition — because in honoring him, we honor the spirit of community itself."
